Hiring Decisions: Don’t Settle

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Nan S. Russell Chuck was the best of the twenty-four candidates. Still, he didn’t have exactly what I was looking for and my instincts warned me of his unusual personality. Yet the skills required for the job were specialized and he had most of them, and I’d been interviewing for five months, and my boss wanted the position filled before the budget process started. No, he might not be perfect, but he would be ok. So I hired Chuck. As a new manager, it was a decision I came to regret. Chuck turned out to be a marginal performer, never grew into the job, and drew frequent complaints from his teammates. It might have taken me five months to hire Chuck, but it took me eighteen to fire him. Still, I’m grateful for the experience. Chuck taught me a lesson I applied in my next twenty years in management: don’t settle. When you settle, you choose mediocrity. Don’t settle for the best of the worst. Keep looking. Don’t settle for something that’s barely okay. Push to make it better. Don’t settle for average work from others when exceptional is needed. And don’t settle for delivering good when you’re capable of better. Expect more from yourself. Then expect more from others. Whenever I’ve settled, the work or decision comes back like a boomerang, reminding me to keep my standards high. As W. Somerset Maugham says, “It is a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it.” I know that’s been my experience. There’s a story I like about Phidias, a Greek sculptor working on the Acropolis. As he was finishing a statue of Athena, which would stand a hundred feet high next to a marble wall, an onlooker asked, “Why are you chiseling strands of hair on the back of her head where no one will see them or even know they’re there? “I’ll know,” replied Phidias. I wish I would have found a cabinet maker with that same attitude when we were building our home. When we moved in, we discovered tops of cabinets uncapped and unstained. It’s true no one would see them. But, it was not the quality of work we expected, paid for or wanted. The cabinet maker had settled for mediocre. But we didn’t. We had him do them over. People who are winning at working know when good is not good enough. They operate like Phidais, not our cabinet maker. They understand that quality work is not an accident. It’s a deliberate focus that starts with high personal standards. People who are winning at working don’t settle for mediocre. Not in others. And not in themselves. (c) 2005 Nan S. Russell. Real Friends

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By Skye Thomas About a year ago, I was talking to a friend of mine on the telephone. He had just experienced a big success in his career and wanted to brag. We had a great time cheering and laughing over his big moment. Then as we were wrapping up our phone call, he apologized for gloating to me. I blew it off telling him, “Don’t apologize! Real friends are people that you can cry with during the bad times and gloat with during the good times. Everyone else expects you to be politically correct in your behaviors.” What’s the point of having friends if you can’t be yourself around them? A friend is someone to cry with during the bad times. Everyone knows how great it is to have a friend during your time of need to cry on their shoulder. In reality, people don’t like it if you cry on their shoulder for very long. So the sign of a real friend is that you can cry on their shoulder until you’re done crying. And if you’re crying too long, your friend will make you snap out of it. They help you to pull yourself back together rather than just give a superficial “There there dearie” and then going on about their lives. You’ll be able to tell real quick who your real friends are during the crisis and uglier times of your life. They’re the only ones still hanging around. A friend is some to gloat with during the good times. We’re all raised that it’s distasteful to brag and to come across as egotistical. The result is that most of us are afraid to say much of anything positive about ourselves. You’re allowed to celebrate a job promotion, a marriage, or the birth of a child, but it’s supposed to be done with class and style. A real friend is someone that you can call up and spend twenty minutes telling them what an awesome job you just did on a project at work and how you feel so incredibly proud of yourself and they are going to be happy for you. They are not going to chastise you for being arrogant. When you have some serious politics going on at work and you pull of a brilliant career move, your friend is going to cheer with you and laugh along with you as you succeed. A friend is someone to rage with when life is really unfair. That’s not to say they’re going to help you plot your ex’s murder or anything like that, but when you’re really ticked off and need to vent, they’ll be there for you. You can safely tell your real friends just how angry you are and they’ll help you find ways to dissipate the anger and to eventually let it go. Humor is a wonderful way that friends have of helping us to let go of our anger. Rather then help you plot the murder, they can throw out a few wonderfully witty comments about your ex and get you laughing again. Know matter what it is that you’re upset about, your real friends will be there for you. A friend is someone to dream with while plotting your goals. Real friends make awesome cheerleaders. They believe in you and in your ability to achieve your goals. Everyone else may be politely disinterested in what you’re planning to do with your life, but your real friends will be thrilled to hear about what you’re doing. They’ll help you to brainstorm ideas and will pitch in to help you make your dreams come true whenever possible. A friend is someone to pray with for support. We’ve all seen the research and the studies show that the power of prayer is magical no matter who or what it is that you think you’re praying to. The studies also show that whenever two or more people get together to pray, that they power becomes increasingly strong. From my own experience I would like to point out that when you have a real friend pray with you instead of a well meaning acquaintance, that the increased power is so much greater. Yes the stranger helps, but nothing beats the power of a friend’s prayers. A friend is someone that you can laugh with until you make that funny snorting sound. Only with my dearest friends have I laughed so hard that tears poured down my face. I have shared funny stories with my friends that I’d never share with coworkers and such. Part of it is because with real friends there is a trust level and you know that you have similar views about what’s humor and what’s not. So, you can share jokes that otherwise might not be appropriate to tell the church ladies after service. Real friends laugh together. My daughter wanted me to add this last one. A friend is someone to burp and fart with because they don’t care if you are a real person. She has determined that the reason her best friend has trouble getting along with the other girls at school is because her friend doesn’t realize that you can’t do that sort of thing in front of people that are only polite superficial surface level friends. My daughter says that because they’re best friends it’s okay if one of them burps or farts in the presence of the other, but they can’t do it in front of anyone else. I suppose she makes a valid point. I’m not saying you should be a completely trashy mess of bad manners and selfishness around your friends, but at least know that with real friends you can be yourself and they aren’t going to turn their back on you. If you have to walk on eggshells, be on your best manners, or monitor your every word and action, then you’re probably not with a real friend. A real friend is one of life’s greatest blessings, don’t forget to give thanks. Advantages and Disadvantages of Fast Cash Loans

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Kenny]Joseph Kenny We have all seen the advertisements on the television or on the radio; in fact, you may also seen them on billboards while driving to and from work. These advertisements are for fast cash loans, otherwise known as payday loans. When it comes to obtaining a fast cash loan or a payday loan, there are many individuals who are misinformed. This misinformation often ends up costing you, and other in the same situation, more money than you can afford. Payday loans or fast cash loans are highly sought after because they are quick. Unlike applying for a loan with your local bank or most online lenders, you usually receive a response by the end of the day. With most traditional lenders, it can take up to one week to receive an approval or denial for a loan. There are many individuals who cannot or do not want to wait that long. If you are one of those individuals, it is likely that you will seek assistance from an establishment offering fast cash loans or payday loans. As previously mentioned the biggest advantage of obtaining a fast cash loan or a payday loan is that you will have the money in your hand, often right away. Another popular advantage is that many lending establishments do not run a check on your credit. This means that even if you have bad credit, you are likely to be able to obtain one of these loans. Instead of checking your credit, the lender may decide to examine when your next paycheck will come. You are often required to repay the money borrowed with that check. That is why fast cash loans are also commonly referred to as payday loans. The biggest disadvantage of payday loans or fast cash loans is the amount of interest that you will be charged. Each lender is likely to charge different interest rates. Unlike the interest rates charged by most banks, you will find that the rates for these types of loans are sky-high. It is also important to examine the term of your loan. Most traditional financial lenders have a term that is at least a year or two. With payday loans and fast cash loans, you often only have a few weeks to make a repayment. If you must obtain a payday loan or a fast cash loan, it is important to make sure that you will be able to repay the loan in the appropriate amount of time. If you are not able to repay the loan on time, you are encouraged not to even obtain it. This is because the late fees assessed on payday loans or fast cash loans are often more than you can even imagine. With interest rates and late fees, it is possible that you could even up paying double the money that you received in advance. A fast cash loan or a payday loan may seem like your only option, but for the most part, it is not. Before obtaining a fast cash loan, you are encouraged to speak with your friends or relatives. You may find that someone you know would be willing to temporarily loan you the money that you need. It is advised that you avoid payday loans or fast cash loans at all costs. However, if you do need one, you should proceed with caution and use your best judgment. Exotic Types of Bonsai Tree

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

By Albert Butler Not all types of bonsai tree are of a coniferous or deciduous species, with the occasional fruit tree forming part of the collection. The bonsai artist can choose a type of bonsai tree that is much more exotic. One of the more exotic choices is the Wisteria bonsai. A native of China, Korea, and Japan, they can reach 30 feet in the wild. Forming them into a bonsai is a difficult challenge, since they dont conform to any of the usual styles. The flowering habit of the Japanese bonsai tree is perhaps the most spectacular of the Wisteria bonsai. The Wisteria flower, assuming a variety of colors including blue, purple, pink, and white, are both beautiful and aromatic. The Wisteria flower carries a distinctive fragrance similar to that of grapes. The early flowering time of the Japanese bonsai tree Wisteria can cause problems in temperate climates, where early frost can destroy the coming year flowers. The care of Wisteria bonsai is fairly easy. They need lots of water in the spring when they are blooming, adequate drainage, and ample fertilizer. Also need fertilizer in the fall before the leaves fall off. Another one the exotic types of bonsai tree is the Orange Jasmine. It is another option that will provide beauty to the eye and delight to the nose. This type of bonsai tree is a summer flowering tree from western and southern China. It has small leave blossoms which are followed by bright, decorative, red fruit. Orange Jasmine bonsai tree should be fed every three to four weeks beginning in early spring and continuing through mid-autumn. Light watering is adequate for most of the year only slightly more in the summer. The Orange Jasmine type of bonsai tree can be raised indoors since they do better in filtered sun and moderate shade. The Mimosa silk tree type of bonsai tree is as fragrant as either of the two types of bonsai tree above. Their lacy foliage and puffy flowers are also just as lovely. The Mimosa silk tree flowers bloom in late April to early July. During this blooming season they should receive moderate amounts of water. You need to avoid over watering the flowers because, like most flowering plants, they will wilt and deteriorate when wet. The Desert Rose bonsai tree is another non-traditional choice of exotic tree. It is native to East Africa and it can grow up to 8-10 feet in the wild. It has fleshy leaves and forms a very bulbous base and produces exotic 2 inch pink and white, open-trumpet shaped flowers throughout the year in full sun. This type of bonsai tree is sensitive to cold and should be brought indoors in clod climates. During this period they will need very little water. If you are a Bonsai tree lover and want more exotic types of bonsai tree, there are many choices available that could make an excellent design complement to the many trees in a standard bonsai set. What is Organic Food?

Monday, November 12th, 2007

By Vickie Adair When I first started hearing about organic food, I was a little confused since all food, scientifically speaking, falls into the carbon-based organic category. But, in the world of grocery shopping organic specifically refers to foods which meet the U.S. Department of Agricultures set of national standards concerning properly certified organic foods. Only products certified by the USDA can be sold as officially organic in the U.S. Any producer who neglects to follow these guidelines, and has previous certification by the USDA is fined per offense. So, what we really need to understand is the USDA guidelines. Ideally, the USDA standards ensure that foods labeled organic are produced without the use of pesticides, fertilizers, hormones, additives and other chemicals that conventionally produced dairy, meat, vegetable and fruits may contain. The USDA has strict regulations for certifying organic fruits, vegetables, and grains. All organic plant products must grow from fields that have been certifiably organic for three years or more (without using pesticides, or fertilizers), and post-harvest handling must also be conducted under USDA guidelines. However, a transitional label may be given to farms that are converting their farming methods from conventional to organic before the criteria are actually met. Under meat and poultry guidelines, animals must be raised without growth stimulants, hormones or antibiotics to be certified as organic. They must also have access to certified organic pastures outdoors, clean water and bedding, as well as exercise and fresh air. All organic meat and poultry processing plants are regularly inspected by USDA officials. Packing plants must isolate organically raised/fed animals from conventional herds. Plants that pack organically raised animals must be cleaned to organic specifications, before the product is run. Dairy products from all dairy animals, including cows, sheep and goats may be certified organic. Farmers raising animals for organic dairy production must also adhere to strict guidelines. Animal feed must be 100% organic, and produced on the farmland, untreated with synthetic fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides and herbicides. The feed must be untreated for at least three seasons prior to harvest, before it can be fed to an animal whose milk will be converted into an organic dairy product. The animals themselves must be raised without drugs, such as antibiotics and growth hormones. These products include cheese, milk, yogurt, butter, sour cream, ice cream, and cottage cheese. Certified organic milk may never be blended or come in contact with non-organic milk. In accordance with standard hygiene, dairy safety procedures, including pasteurization, organic certification also requires other specifications: humane treatment of animals, clean water and bedding, exercise, fresh air, and access to an outdoor pasture. The USDA organic seal also indicates the exact amount of organic content in the food which ironically never has to be 100%. To be certified organic, the food product need only be 95% organic. Varying degrees of organic foods are also noted on organic labeled foods with more than one ingredient: organic (at least 95%), made with organic products (70%-95% organic ingredients), less than 70% organic (containing less than 70% organic ingredients). Other labels note a foods exclusion from hormones, antibiotics, and other chemicals found in conventional foods. Offer A Free Download Or Report To Your Visitors

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

By James Winston One of the best ways to get your product or service in the hands of your prospective customers is to give them something FREE. Write a free article, newsletter, ezine, report, book or anything in your area of business and include your business info. You could have pens, t-shirts, stickers or flyers with your website and logo imprinted to give as gifts. Always include your business info in your emails, letters, checks, post cards and other correspondence. Make a category on your website for free downloads. Could be in the form of latest news, updates, information, helpful hints or tips and tricks. In a nutshell, companies ride on the idea that if people like the content of a media they will pass it on to their friends and family. They sponsor the certain media, such as a cool flash game, funny video, amusing story and such, which one may pass on to another with the company brand or logo or the products description or any other content to help promote the company or its product. Write a review on your products and give your opinion or experience. Offer as a free download or report to your visitors. When using classified ads dont try to sell your service from the ad. Offer more info or free details and then place a link to your site, email address or auto responder. Send out press releases to various publications introducing your service. Describe yourself and your business and anything unique or special about your particular brand of products. Bottom line. Get the word out. Information can be given for free to your prospects. The History of Junk Gathering

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

By Le Perdu There comes a time in everyones life when they look around and wonder what all the stuff that they have gathered up over the course of their life actually is. Collecting and gathering are natural parts of life, possibly going back as far as our caveman days when gathering was a prerequisite to the very survival of our species. Obscure studies have shown that cavemen (and women) collected anything and everything they could find just in case that they might need it in order to survive one day. Stone age caves are generally found to be full of sand, rocks and bones and, on occasion graffiti, for this reason. There is a strong possibly that theses habit are genetic and therefore inescapable and unavoidable. In our modern lives these habits have taken on entirely new proportions. So much stuff is readily available that any modern gatherer struck down by this insidious habit will require a substantial capital outlay to be able to fulfill the urge. Many gatherers rent extra storage space and then proceed to fill it up as quickly as possible, almost like its some type of perverse competition. Others simply move into a larger house with an extra bedroom or even better, a large garage. The garage has become the place of choice for most Americans to store their vast collections of junk in. Yard sales should not to be viewed as an opportunity to lower junk volumes but rather as a method of thinning out the existing junk to make room for more selective and possibly equally as useless items. People who shop at yard sales are simply there to enhance their own junk collections and everyone who donate some of their junk to the Salvation Army or the Red Cross fall squarely into the same category. Simply put, junk gatherers never stop gathering. Calling everything junk is tedious and perhaps slightly insulting to the gatherer. So what should all this high quality stuff-that-might-be needed-one-day be called? Quampha. An expressly word created, Quampha is best described as all the unnecessary things in your life. Unnecessary? Who gets to decide what is unnecessary? A general and long-standing rule of thumb is that one mans junk is another mans treasure, which implies that he who does not own it (IE: not the collector) is the person who gets to label it as Quampha or treasure. Usage:Quampha can be to describe almost any unnecessary items or things from the contents of your wifes handbag (which incidentally is what the word was first used to describe) to the overwhelming quantity of stationery in almost everyones drawers in their office desk. Further it can be used to described a particularly useless or lazy person, Mike is pure Quampha today or I wish that when he was full of Quampha he would just stay at home le Perdu is a contributing author on http://www.Quampha.com, a growing site dedicated to random reading, obscure articles and some rather out there opinions. Things Banks and Other Lenders Won’t Tell You (Part 03) The Value Of A Bank Package

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

By Jim Hart Having a professionally prepared bank package under your arm can go a long way to helping you get the financing your are seeking whether it is for personal debt consolidation or large-scale commercial mortgage financing. A professional loan request package can, in fact, move a C-class borrower to a B-class and a B-class borrower to an A-Class. Why? When you have a professional bank package that represents your project the lender (s) your present your case to will be impressed with your knowledge of the economics of the deal and the professional assembly of that information in a format that is easy to understand, and approve. In essence, you are communicating with a lender on their terms, on level ground. Even if you dont get the exact loan you are seeking, you will get the respect of the lender. Bank package preparation is a closely held trade secret by the elite few in the financial world, people known as financial brokers or financial consultants who earn substantial fees ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars depending on the size and scope of a transaction. It is not uncommon for a financial consultant to receive $2,500.00 to prepare a commercial real estate bank package for a client and about $500.00 for relatively simple personal loan requests. This information is so well protected because of the fees earned with this knowledge. Think about it: If you were a lender, and two equally qualified people approached you for financing, one was unorganized and unprepared with a loan request written on the back of a napkin and the other had a highly organized bank package. Of these two people, which person would get your attention? Who would you feel most comfortable loaning money? This is why you need to know how to prepare a bank package for your specific type of loan request. And if you think this not true, keep in mind that there are 100 people behind you all standing in line for a loan. The banker or other lender, who is on a salary, probably doesnt want or need to work hard on your deal The bank package does the work for the lender, increasing the chances of you getting the financing you are seeking!
