Studies Identify Relationships Between Sleep and Weight Gain (Part 2)

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Michael Callen In part one of this series, we discussed a relationship between sleep and weight, and three hormones that had serious implications when it comes to weight loss or gain. Two hormones were discussed in part one of this series (leptin and cortisol) and today we are going to discuss the third, human growth hormone (HGH). A 1999 study published in “The Lancet” followed a group of young men who were limited to just 4 hours of sleep for sixteen straight days had increased levels of cortisol - which slows metabolism and causes fat to be stored - and decreased levels of leptin - which cause a “satisfied” feeling when the body has consumed enough food. As a follow up to this study, Eve Van Cauter (the head researcher) looked more deeply into the effects of sleep deprivation on the body’s chemistry - particularly as it pertains to weight loss or gain. The results of the follow up study were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2000. The follow up study looked at the phases of sleep that a person experiences and how those phases change as a person gets older. It seems that as men age, they experience less “deep sleep” than when they were younger. Women, on the other hand, experience about the same amount of “deep sleep” throughout their lives, until after menopause when their sleep patterns more closely match that of a similarly aged male. So what, you ask, does that have to do with weight gain or loss? The answer varies whether you are a male or a female, and has to do with the third hormone we will discuss: human growth hormone. HGH, as it is commonly called, is secreted into the blood stream for the purpose of repairing muscle and tissue. If you are exercising, you are actually damaging your muscles by creating tiny tears in the tissues. This is how we gain lean muscle. We break down the muscle when we exercise, and then we rebuild it at night while we sleep. Men secrete two-thirds of their HGH during the periods of “deep sleep” and women secrete one-third of thiers. If you are robbing yourself of valuable sleep, you aren’t getting to the point where HGH is getting into your blood stream. The less “deep sleep” that a person experiences, the less HGH that is available to build lean muscle. What makes this worse is that the study found (at least for men) that even if they get the same number of hours of sleep as a younger man, they still get less “deep sleep” than their younger counterparts. Van Cauter’s research showed that a 45-year-old man’s HGH production will have decreased by 75% as compared to a 25-year-old. Since the odds are stacked against us as we get older, what are we to do? As you may be aware, the body is an efficient and hard-working machine. It has three major processes that operate over the course of the day. We work (exercise), we make energy (digest) and we repair (sleep), just not all at once. Each of the processes requires too much energy to be efficiently performed while another is being completed. If you don’t believe me, eat a big meal and go run for two hours. The body was designed to fuel and then work and then refuel and work some more, and then repair itself overnight. The more HGH that is released into the blood stream, the more muscle repair, and even lean muscle gain, takes place. Two things that we can do to help stack the odds in our favor are to make time for exercise and sleep, and to supplement with time release whey protein before sleep. Supplementing with whey protein (such as NightTrainer, http://www.nighttrainer.com) puts the building blocks of muscle (protein and amino acids) into your body so that they’re available to help the HGH build more lean muscle. (An added benefit I’ve noticed is that because it comes in chocolate and vanilla flavor, I can avoid eating dessert when I’m craving something sweet late at night, knowing I’ll soon be enjoying my protein drink.) As has been chronicled here and myriad other texts, building lean muscle is exactly what one needs to do in order to win the battle of the bulge. Sweet dreams! Silver Wedding Rings

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

By Peter Emerson Silver rings give a very elegant and traditional look and are a favorite with many individuals as they can go along with any outfit. Although gold is more preferred than silver due to its scarcity and shine, it proves to be expensive. Irrespective of silver having an extremely high electrical and thermal conductivity, it is relatively abundant and easy to extract from ore and hence, is affordable. Silver wedding rings are known for its affordability and beauty. It is considered one of the most reflective metals. Hence, there is a possibility of polishing it to a higher sheen as compared to other white metals. It is very important to take care of silver wedding rings as they can easily lose its natural luster. Couples are advised to store their silver rings in velvet jewelry boxes when not in use, this ensures them not turning black due to air exposure. It should also be polished after a certain period of time in order to make it last for a longer time. The solution and cloth used for cleaning the rings should be exclusively separate from other dusting equipment. Silver rings are commonly found in a lot of decorative designs and patterns. This may include gemstones and intricately carved original designs. There are simple silver rings that come with small diamonds studded on the top, which give it a rich and elegant look. Many couples could also go for sterling silver wedding rings. There are plenty of silver crystal wedding rings available for couples to choose from. Individuals are requested to buy silver wedding rings from reputed stores in order to avoid purchasing fake silver rings. Customers can search for silver wedding rings on various websites, which provide details of the various designs and styles of rings currently in vogue. The details about their prices and which stores they are available in are also mentioned along with the description of the weight, size, and make of the silver wedding rings. Wedding Rings provides detailed information on Wedding Rings, Titanium Wedding Rings, Platinum Wedding Rings, Celtic Wedding Rings and more. Wedding Rings is affiliated with Diamond Wedding Bands. Negotiations Within Negotiation

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Charles Parselle If only two persons attend a mediation and they are both have authority to settle, then only three negotiations take place. They are between (1) person 1 and person 2, (2) person 1 and mediator, (3) person 2 and mediator. The dynamics of this are easy to manage. More commonly, at least four persons attend, namely two parties and two attorneys, in which case ten dynamic interactions may take place, as follows: (1) party 1 and party 2, (2) party 1 and lawyer 1, (3) party 1 and mediator, (4) party 1 and lawyer 2, (5) party 2 and lawyer 2, (6) party 2 and mediator, (7) party 2 and lawyer 1, (8) lawyer 1 and mediator, (9) lawyer 2 and mediator, (10) lawyer 1 and lawyer 2. It is easy to draw a cats cradle to demonstrate the complex dynamics that exist in the above simple mediation, with only two parties each represented by an attorney. If this was a dinner party with five friends, the conversation would be a free for all with everyone having a wonderful time. But a mediator cannot afford to have a free for all in a mediation session. A mediation is a negotiation, and every negotiation is (however politely or amicably conducted) an adversarial process. It is war waged with kisses. Further, most mediations take place within a larger context of adversarial relationships, or adversarial process such as potential or pending litigation. If there are multiple participants, i.e. more than two parties and two attorneys in a mediation, the cats cradle becomes exponentially more complex, in fact, exceedingly complex. Such negotiations can easily get out of hand. It becomes all the more important for the mediator to set herself or himself as the focal point of all communications, and to control cross-table communications quite carefully, with as much finesse as possible. No one attends a mediation without an agenda. Every persons agenda is different. The mediator must control the flow of communication, or the negotiation will founder. That is why he was hired. With whatever subtlety or bluntness this is accomplished, it is essential. The mediator must be willing to shut off a destructive communication. He/she must also be willing to draw necessary communication out of participants who are keeping silent, even if this requires a private session. The easiest way to control the dynamics of the situation, without attempting to stifle them, is to have the participants communicate with each other through the mediator. The slight deflection that this requires has an ameliorating effect on the language and the attitude of the speaker. As this is exactly what happens in court, attorneys are used to it. There are only two kinds of communication in mediation. The first is any communication that keeps the negotiation moving towards clarity and settlement. The second is any communication that tends to torpedo, stifle or impede clarity and settlement. When bad communications occur, as they always do, the mediator must repair the damage and move on. There are only two venues for a communication. The first is in joint session. The second is in private session. Joint sessions are for participants to communicate positively such facts, attitudes, interpretations, arguments, and offers as will tend to move the parties closer to the goal of settlement. Individual sessions have two purposes. The first is to permit participants to vent. Venting means to express negative thoughts and emotions about the other side. The setting in which such venting takes place must be controlled by the mediator in such a way as to advance, not impede, the purpose of settlement, and this means in private session. The purpose of venting is to get it said and done with. Some people take longer to vent than others. Some people never stop venting on their own volition, in which instance the mediator must make a calculated judgment when to call a halt to it. The second purpose of private session is to discuss what the participants will say in joint session, or what they want the mediator to convey to the other side. Sometimes a participant wants to express his or her thoughts, emotions, feelings or attitudes directly to the other side. This is the side of mediation that is closest to therapy. The only reason to permit this is if it will advance the settlement process. How this is done is very important. There is a world of difference between on the one hand, explaining how one feels, and on the other hand, engaging in an ad hominem attack on another participant. This can be quite subtle. However much a person is coached, sometimes they just cannot resist turning an account of how they feel into a personal attack. There is a simple rule concerning ad hominem attacks: dont do it, because it never helps. These issues do not always arise. Often, the volume and extent of these potentially explosive interactions is reduced or minimized by the parties themselves or their lawyers. Some lawyers prefer keep their clients out of the negotiations, keeping them on hand to ratify settlement proposals. Some parties do not want to take an active part in the proceeding, feeling that is what they retained an attorney to do for them. Also, attorneys often do not want their clients interacting directly with the other sides attorney. Some clients become terribly frustrated with the other sides attorney, seeing him or her as the supreme obstacle sometimes such a client takes the opportunity to call the other sides attorney a liar; the mediator should put an immediate stop to such fighting words. Charles B. Parselle is a mediator, arbitrator and attorney. He graduated from Oxford Universitys Honor School of Jurisprudence and is a member of the English bar, then was admitted to the California Bar in 1983. Wedding Invitation Wording Tips And Explanations

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Gail Leino Your wedding invitation wording has to fit the type of wedding you wish to have. Long gone are the days of formal invites. What you have to decide is how you want your invite to be worded. Do you want your parents names placed with yours? Does you or your fiance family name go first? If the brides parents are paying have her parents’ names precede hers followed by the grooms name. Now you don’t have to be formal with your wedding invitation wording. You can simple state both of your names and that you would like to enjoy each guest to welcome in your marriage. Any way for wording works just fine. Thought you could decide that you both want to have your parent’s names on the invitation. With that in mind you can have the bride’s parents name come first, that they would like to announce the marriage of their daughter. Then place the brides name and who she is marrying after that you can have the groom’s parent’s names. Though things will be different if you have stepparents the wording for your wedding invitation will have to be thought out. If you place one set of parents then you need to place the all the names on the invite. If only one parent is married, mention them first then the other parents name and finally yours. If both are married mention both of their names. This is a choice you both need to decide on; too many names might confuse people if they don’t know your family though at the same leaving a parent off the invite might hurt feelings. Your wedding invitation wording will have balance your wishes and how you want your invite to look. Anything is acceptable right now and it boils down what you and your fiance want to do. Chosing A Best Man For Your Marriage

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Eric Hartwell The celebration of a wedding is normally a family event. Thus, it is not surprising to find that most of the attendees in any wedding consist of relatives from both sides of the bride and the groom. It is even more traditional that people who are part of the wedding entourage are either the brother, sister, cousin, niece or nephew of the couple to be wed. For the ladies, the most coveted position is to be chosen as the maid of honor since the person picked is one whom the bride considers to be her closest or best friend. Then there are also the bridesmaids and flower girls to complete the ensemble. On the mens side, the equivalent position of the maid of honor is the best man. The other members of the wedding entourage are the page boys and the ring bearer. Generally, it is the groom who will decide who he wants to be his best man. It is very rare that the best man is chosen by another person. The grooms final choice for best man will usually be one of his male best friends. Given that a wedding is a reunion of family and friends, it is natural that the groom would want his best friend to share in his joy at the occasion. Aside from his closest male friend, the groom may also pick his brother to fill the role of the best man. Sometimes, the groom may choose a person who is neither his best friend nor his brother, but someone who is responsible for introducing him to his bride-to-be. In rare cases, the groom may even decide to have a female best person. Traditionally, the best man should be single since he will also be actively participating in the wedding preparation, hence this can be time-consuming. This is not to say that single people have time on their hands! However, it is now acceptable that a married person become the best man. In this case, the groom as well as bride can benefit from the wisdom that will be imparted by a married best man as regards starting and building a family. Understanding The Millennium (1000 Years Reign) Part 1

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By William Bell, Jr. The Most Controversial Point The greatest point of contention regarding the millennium is the question of whether it is a literal or figurative 1000 years. There are myriads of references to a thousand (or multiple thereof) used in the Bible. Check out Numbers 1:27-46. There is no question about the literal use of 1,000. However, there are also figurative uses of the word. For example, God keeps mercy to a thousand generations, Exodus 34:7. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, Psalms 50:10. His covenant extends to a thousand generations. There is no limit to the extent of Gods mercy. He will have mercy upon all who call upon him, (Romans 8:32) To limit it to a literal thousand generations would limit the power of God to save. Secondly, the earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof, (Psalms 24:1; 1 Corinthians 10:26, 28). God owns not only the cattle on a thousand hills. He owns all the hills, mountains, valleys and all in between, above and beneath. This is a figurative expression and poetic way of God saying that he owns all. Third, he explains a thousand generations to mean of everlasting duration speaking of his covenant he made with Abraham, 1 Chronicles 16:15-17. Thus Paul writes, Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages world without end amen, (Ephesians 3:21). Again, there is no limit to the generations of which God extends his mercy. Revelation Chapter 20 The millennium is mentioned in one of the most apocalyptic and symbolical books of the Bible and perhaps one of the most symbolical of all chapters. We have mention of a key a bottomless pit and a great chain with which the dragon Satan is bound and shut up by a seal in the bottomless pit for a millennium i.e. a thousand years. Are we to believe that Satan was literally sealed up a literal bottomless pit with a chain? Such stretches the imagination as incredulous. However, the key message and theme of the text is to show that the angel (messenger from heaven) probably Christ, had the key (authority) to bind Satan with his chain (the word or power of God) and with the seal indicated that he could only be loosed by one having authority to do so, thus a divine being. Why then conclude that the thousand years are literal? The Time What makes the a literal 1,000 years binding of Satan which also runs concurrent with the 1,000 years reign with Christ (Revelation 20:4, 6) less likely are the time limitations found in the beginning, middle and end of the book. The Revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave to him to show his servants things which must shortly come to pass and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John.Blessed is he who reads and keeps the words of this prophecy for the time is near. (Revelation 1:1,3). Thus, God says these events would and must shortly come to pass and at the time of writing, (pre-A.D. 70) were at hand or imminent. The same statements are found in the middle of the book where God says there would be no delay of the endtime events, (Revelation 10:6) and thus even Satan knew that he had but a short time (Revelation 12:10) before he would be cast into the lake of fire. John reiterates this imminence at the end of the book with the warning from the angel that he was not to seal the book for the time was at hand for those things to shortly be done, (22:6) Copyright (c) 2006 by William Bell, Jr. All rights reserved. Building Your Business On The Golf Course-2

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

By Dan Boever The first article looked at using golf as a tool to spend quality time with your prospect or customer. Now that we have a commitment from our guest to join us for an afternoon round of golf how can we make sure the day is enjoyable for them? Pick a course your guest would want to play. It is best to find the nicest place possible. This aspect alone is a great study in how humans are wired. Some people will have absolutely no problem with whatever course you choose. Others will judge you (critically) based on where you take them. Ego can become a big issue here when course selection is not up to par. You need to know if your guest is already a member somewhere in town. Knowing where they are a member will tell you more than just the club name. All cities have a pecking order of best to worst golf courses and that works with country clubs as well. If they are used to playing at resorts and high end private country clubs you must find a place that will be on that level or above. I always try and get them onto a course they have never played or have played sparingly. There are many wonderful daily fee public courses but I am sorry to say the private club will normally provide a better overall atmosphere. There are reasons it cost a lot of money to join a nice country club. I will say it again, this is not always the case and if you cannot get onto a private club then find the best public facility you can. Why am I so sold on private facilities? I am glad you asked! First has to do with crowd size. My intentions are to have quality time with as few distractions as possible. I want a place where there are few people on the range and few on the course. I want my guest to feel like the day is his and the course is his. If you pull up to the driving range and it is packed with golfers your guest will feel like he’s part of a big herd. Keep this in mind as well, if you had your client bring a friend then his neck is on the line as well as far as “looking good” for the day. Here is some simple math, six on the range is better than sixty. Find a time with very little play and you will start the day off on the right foot. How packed the range is will determine how fast or slow your round of golf will be. Your round should be at the pace you decide, not at a pace the group behind you decides. If I want to sit on a tee box for five extra minutes and hear about when your guest was in college then you should be able to do so, without someone yelling at you to hurry up. You want your pace of play to be at a pace that is enjoyable for your “guest”. This is about them and what they want/like. Playing behind eight guys with beer coolers strapped to their three-wheelers may not create the best environment to build your relationship on the course. If you tee off after a group of guys who are not wearing shirts, you might as well be back at the office because you are wasting your companies money. In the next article we will look at how you can make the round more enjoyable for everyone involved. Remember, the key to a successful business day on the golf course is for your prospect or client to have a great time. It will always be, all about them. Chest Hair Removal

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

By Richard Romando Chest hair removal is widely practiced these days by all beauty-conscious people. Removal of hair makes chest look clean with clearly visible muscles. That is why chest hair removal is mandatory for those engaged in bodybuilding and modeling fields. Many women also practice chest hair removal, which makes their skin more attractive. There are many methods available for chest hair removal, which include shaving, waxing, hair removal creams, and laser and electrolysis methods. The first three are do-it-yourself methods for home use, and they are short term hair removals. The last two are salon methods, practiced only by trained professionals. They offer permanent hair removal. If the hair is too long, cut your hair using a scissor or hair trimmer before practicing any method. Shaving is a fast, least expensive and most popular method of chest hair removal. But it lasts only for a few days, usually 2 to 4 days, and can cause cuts and irritation. Before shaving, always keep the skin and hair moist, and apply shaving cream at least 3 minutes before shaving. Use only sharp new blade and stock multiple blades. Shave slowly without applying much pressure. Shave down first, then up. Do not shave an area more than twice. Waxing is another method widely practiced for chest hair removal. It is better than shaving. Waxing can provide more lasting effects. A number of chest hair removal waxers are available in the market. Another alternative to waxing, known as sugaring, is also practiced widely. Nipple area is highly sensitive with lot of nerves, thus closely tweeze the hair with tweezers. Do not shave or wax this area. Tweezers and epilators are not commonly used for the rest of the chest area. Since they remove hair individually, it will take a longer time to complete one session, and they often need the assistance of another person. Yet another widely practiced method is the use of chest hair removal or depilatory creams. These creams dissolve the hair protein making the hair fit to be wiped or washed off the skin. They are comparatively inexpensive and easier to use. But the effect never lasts long. Laser chest hair removal is a comparatively new technique. It is quick and it offers permanent hair removal. But it requires multiple sessions in one or two week interval and is very expensive. Creating Your At Home Get-Away-From-It-All, The Secret Garden

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

By August Holcombe Since reading the children’s book “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett, haven’t you desired yourown secret garden? Perhaps its your vision of Paradise on earth. Perhaps your secret garden comes with nice big bushes of Common Box or English Box, some honeysuckle or rose covered arbor with a nicecomfortable teak seat to spend many lazy summer afternoons without leaving the confines of the homegarden. Surely contemporary Garden design has a myriad of ways to hardscape and plant you secret garden withshrubs, vines, and trees, and to accessorize with contemporary garden decor and objects. Perhaps your secret garden lies under some venerable old oak or under a clump of birches - maybe it hasa number of bulbs like in the book where hope springs eternal and when warm days brightened up thewinterish sky. Maybe it is clothed in vines of ivy, grape, trumpet creeper, or if it is in a tropical climatewith vines of Bougainvillea situated in the midst of those magical looking roots of ficus. For in your own secret garden you have found a place to discuss the problems of the world with a spouse, perhaps not anything so grand in the scheme of things, perhaps a place to teach Rover some newtricks, or more picturesque yet - a place for baby to take his first steps, or just a place to get away fromit all.
